"Let us come together to overcome this threat and build regional cooperation in order to form a strong global civilization," Ryacudu noted at the opening of the Indonesia International Defense Science Seminar (IIDSS) 2019 in Jakarta on Monday.
The minister pointed to similarities in the characteristics of terrorism in the Indo-Pacific region, originating from domestic conflicts in Syria that later developed into ISIS.
The terror threat, then extending to ASEAN countries and several Asian nations, is posed by various militant organizations, such as the Daulah Islamiah.
Terrorism is undeniably disturbing the security dynamics of the affected countries.
Hence, cooperation to create a sense of security in the Indo-Pacific region has become a necessity that can no longer be postponed, Ryacudu reiterated.
Indo-Pacific is a strategic region, as 40 percent of the global economy, or US$5.8 trillion, circulates in this area.
"I am highly optimistic that expectations and opportunities (for cooperation) will be bigger than the challenges and threats," Ryacudu concluded.
IIDSS is annual seminar hosted by the Indonesian Defense University that brings together experts, academics, military observers, ambassadors of friendly countries, and international organizations and think tanks to discuss defense issues.
This year's event, themed "Enhancing Defense Cooperation to Deal with Terrorism, Cyber Threats and Natural Disaster,” focuses on matters related to security, stability, and humanitarian affairs as well as topics pertaining to defense studies and technologies. EDITED BY INE
