Semarang (ANTARA) - Finance Minister Sri Mulyani expressed her unequivocal support to the government's plan to recruit rectors from abroad to lead higher education in a bid to improve the quality of education.

"The way we manage and lead the education system in Indonesia, we must be open to good ideas and practices," Sri Mulyani affirmed after attending the 38th Anniversary of the University of PGRI Semarang in Central Java on Tuesday.

Minister Sri Mulyani remarked that this is part of the learning process that necessitates time and long life erudition.

On an earlier occasion, the Ministry of Research, Technology, and Higher Education immediately followed up on President Joko Widodo's plan to recruit foreign rectors in Indonesia, starting 2020.

Minister of Research, Technology, and Higher Education Professor Mohamad Nasir will, in the near future, conduct mapping related to various regulations that support and hinder the plan, including simplification.

He will also coordinate in advance with the finance minister over the budget for recruitment of rectors from abroad in an attempt to not disrupt the finances of the relevant universities.

"The funding is directly from the central government, so as to not disrupt the finances that exist in the higher education institutions," he remarked during a working visit to Semarang City on Monday (July 22).

One of the backgrounds of the plan to recruit rectors from abroad is the number of universities in Indonesia that rank among the global league tables in terms of their competitiveness.

Of the 4,700 universities in Indonesia, only three have high global competitiveness.
