Jakarta (ANTARA) - Chief Justice of South Africa Mogoeng Mogoeng welcomes the opportunity for cooperation in the field of law with Indonesia, according to a written statement issued by the Indonesian Embassy in Pretoria and received here, Friday.

The opportunity for law cooperation between Indonesia and South Africa was discussed during a meeting between South Africa's Supreme Court Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng and Indonesian Ambassador to South Africa Salman Al Farisi on August 28, 2019, at the South African Constitutional Court in Johannesburg.

"People want hope, they want the truth," South Africa’s Chief Justice told the Indonesian ambassador.

Chief Justice Mogoeng emphasized further that South Africa had shown rapid development, and the conditions were far better than those during the Apartheid era in the country.

He pointed out that such positive development had boosted hopes among South Africans to lead a better life.

However, Mogoeng further emphasized that a better life in South Africa was not possible in the absence of a credible legal system.

To this end, Chief Justice Mogoeng has called on all South Africans to come forward and report any corruption cases committed by law enforcement officials.

Ambassador Salman Al Farisi echoed the chief justice’s views by reiterating that law enforcement efforts were among the challenges faced by Indonesia in upholding democracy.

Furthermore, Ambassador Al Farisi affirmed that as the fourth-largest democracy in the world, Indonesia is currently working towards improving the integrity of the legal system, through efforts including fighting corruption.

At the meeting, Ambassador Al Farisi also handed over an invitation from Indonesian Chief of Justice Anwar Usman to Chief Justice Mogoeng to attend the 1st International Expert Meeting to be held in Jakarta on September 20-22, 2019.

The 1st International Expert Meeting will also offer a viable opportunity for South Africa to work along with Indonesia in the field of law.

Chief Justice Mogoeng welcomed Indonesia’s offer to bolster bilateral relations between Indonesia and South Africa by intensifying cooperation in the field of law that could be applied through various forms of technical cooperation and sharing of experiences.
