Jakarta (ANTARA) - Nine Indonesian athletes booked their passage into the quarter-finals of the 2019 Yonex Chinese Taipei Open badminton tournament at the Taipei Arena on Friday.

The nine athletes comprising three mixed doubles, two women's doubles, two women's singles, one men's singles, and one men's doubles player will compete with top contenders from other countries, including South Korea, Thailand, Japan, Denmark, Hong Kong, and Malaysia.

In the women's singles category, Indonesian top player Gregoria Mariska Tunjung upstaged Switzerland's Sabrina Jaquet in straight sets, 21-10, 21-15, in round 16.

Another women's singles player Fitriani also secured her place in the quarter-finals after emerging victorious against fellow Indonesian athlete Ruselli Hartawan, 24-22, 21-18.

In the quarter-finals, Tunjung will compete against South Korea's fourth-best player, Sung Ji Hyun, while Fitriani will clash against Thailand's Supanida Katethong.

In the meantime, in the women's doubles, Greysila Polli/Apriyani Rahayu successfully advanced to the quarter-finals after outshining their fellow Indonesian athletes Della Destiara Haris/Rizki Amelia Pradipta in round 16.

Polli/Rahayu will clash against Japan's women’s doubles players, Ayako Sakuramoto/Yukiko Takahata, while the pair of Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti and Ribka Sugiarto will fight against South Korea's second-best, Lee So Hee/Shin Seung Chan.

In the men's singles, Shesar Hiren Rhustavito will compete with Thailand's Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk, while the men's doubles pair Fajar Alfian/Muhammad Rian Ardianto will clash against Denmark's Mathias Boe/Mads Conrad Petersen.

Furthermore, three Indonesian mixed doubles -- Tontowi Ahmad/Winny Oktavina Kandow, Hafiz Faizal/Gloria Emanuelle Widjaja, and Rinov Rivaldy/Pitha Haningtyas Mentari -- also advanced to the quarter-finals. Ahmad/Kandow will compete against Hong Kong's Tang Chun Man/Tse Ying Suet.

In the meantime, Faizal/Widjaja will clash against Thailand's fifth-best Nipitphon Phuangphupet/Savitree Amitrapai, while Rivaldy/Mentari will fight against Chan Peng Soon/Goh Liu Ying. Related news: Indonesians cruise into quarter finals of Badminton Asia Championships
