Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Jakarta Metropolitan Police are conducting a thorough investigation into the alleged involvement of intruders in a student demonstration that ended in a clash with security personnel on Tuesday night.

The clash prolonged until early Wednesday, and the police detained 94 demonstrators in the incident, Chief of the Jakarta Metropolitan Police Inspector General Gatot Eddy Pramono stated on Wednesday.

The police are thoroughly investigating the motive behind the participation of the 94 people in the demonstration to unearth whether they are students or intruders, he remarked.

"We will classify them, whether they are students, community members, or other parties," he noted.

He revealed that during a search of one of the 94 demonstrators, the police found a Molotov cocktail.

The demonstrator carrying the Molotov cocktail is a student and was later arrested for questioning at the West Jakarta Police Resort.

Thousands of students from different institutes of higher learning in and around Jakarta gathered together on the streets on Tuesday to express opposition to the endorsement of the criminal code bill, revised law on the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), and agrarian bill.

The demonstration, which earlier ran peacefully, took a chaotic turn after the protesters acted in an anarchic manner by breaking through a barbed wire cordon to enter the parliament building.

As the demonstrators forced themselves into the parliament building, the police fired water cannon and teargas to disperse the congregation of rioters.

Gatot remarked that 39 police officers suffered injuries in the incident, while 254 students underwent hospitalization.
