Lubukbasung, W Sumatra (ANTARA) - Learning activities at the Kajai Pisik 39 Elementary School in Lubuklinggau, Agam District, West Sumatra, came to a standstill, and students were sent home early in the event of hairy caterpillars swarming the school.

The school’s principal, Syamsiar, affirmed here on Tuesday that the swarm of hairy caterpillars descended upon all rooms in the schools, crawling on tables, chairs, and the school’s roof.

At least 15 of its 121 students developed irritation on coming in contact with the caterpillars.

"The Grade I students were affected by this. We have sent all students home and halted learning activities," he revealed.

The school’s administration was aware of the presence of the caterpillars on a tree in the school yard since Monday.

"We have reported about the incident to the Agam firefighters to eradicate the plague of the hairy caterpillars," he remarked.

Afliwaneri, an official of the Agam Fire Brigade, stated that four firemen had eradicated the hairy caterpillars and disinfected the area.
