The Palestinian people have contributed to supporting the birth of the Republic of Indonesia as an independent country. Indonesia should defend Palestine
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Chairman of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) Hidayat Nur Wahid drew attention to the merit of the Palestinian people in the nation's struggle for independence.

"The Palestinian people have contributed to supporting the birth of the Republic of Indonesia as an independent country. Indonesia should defend Palestine," Hidayat noted in a statement received in Jakarta on Friday.

Indonesia, as part of the global community that upholds humanitarian values and the mandate of the Constitution to oppose colonialism in any form, must defend Palestine.

Wahid noted that Indonesia can defend the Palestinians by opposing unilateral actions of Israeli Zionists and their allies since 1948.

"For instance, opposing claims against Jerusalem, the Golan, and the Jordan valley; the massacre in early November 2019 in the Gaza Strip; and construction of illegal settlements in the West Bank," he pointed out.

He emphasized the need for Indonesia to utilize its position, as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UN), to support Palestine.

Moreover, on November 19, 2019, the UN General Assembly had reaffirmed the right of Palestinians to self-determination in a draft resolution approved by 166 UN member states.

"It is a momentum and a reminder for Indonesia to defend Palestine optimally. Most of the global community remains committed to defending Palestine. Do not let other countries surpass Indonesia, athough they are able to do more for Palestine," he added. Related news: Indonesia rejects US statement on illegal Israeli settlement
