This is because what we will use later are autonomous and electric vehicles in the city. Other vehicles will not be allowed
Jakarta (ANTARA) - There would be no congestion and flooding in Indonesia's new capital city in the districts of Kutai Kertanegara and Penajam Paser Utara, East Kalimantan Province, President Joko Widodo assured here Friday. The new capital city will preserve the natural ecosystem, and as a result, there will be a limited number of private vehicles to be allowed in the roads, Jokowi explained. "All will be powered by renewable energy and people will move around by using public transportation," he added.

Due to its green constructions, the new capital city will have better air quality compared to the existing capital city in Jakarta because the residents will prefer to walk and drive electric vehicles, even the high-tech self-driving cars, Jokowi remarked.

"This is because what we will use later are autonomous and electric vehicles in the city. Other vehicles will not be allowed," the President noted in his remarks while addressing the Annual Meeting of Financial Services Industry 2020 held in Jakarta last week.

The Indonesian government planned to build the new capital city with "smart and metropolis" concept. The two districts that comprise some 40,000 hectares of the main cluster and 256,000 hectares of a buffer zone, will be inhabited by at least six to seven million people.

In 2020, an Indonesian unit of the New York-based management consultant McKinsey & Company will help the government to evaluate the capital city's masterplan in the two districts. In the meantime, the Ministry of National Development Planning (PPN)/National Development Planning Agency will establish agencies and regulations to back the new capital city's construction.

The groundbreaking and the detailed engineering design (DED) will be completed in 2021, while the construction on the new capital city will be carried out between 2022 and 2024, according to the government's plan.
