Palembang, S Sumatra (ANTARA) - Flooding has inundated the villages of Curup and Sukaraja in Tanah Abang Sub-district, Penukal Abab Lematang Ilir District, South Sumatra Province, since last week.

Until now, the two villages were still flooded since they were located in the lowest plains, Head of the Penukal Abab Lematang Ilir Disaster Mitigation Office (BPBD) Junaidi Anwar stated here on Friday.

The floodwaters in Curup reached a height of up to a meter, he noted.

He remarked that most of the flood victims chose to remain in their stilt homes.

The local BPBD had sent clean water and basic supplies and provided free health services to residents affected by flooding that has hindered the daily activities of residents.

"We urge residents to remain vigilant despite the fact that floods occur annually there," Anwar stated.

Last week, the Lematang River had overflowed its bank and swamped 10 villages.

Indonesia is currently experiencing wet rainy season after being hit by prolonged drought that has resulted in a water crisis in several provinces. In Central Tapanuli, North Sumatra, six people lost their lives, while three went missing in flash floods, according to the Central Tapanuli Disaster Mitigation Office (BPBD).

Flooding due to torrential rains submerged seven villages in Barus Sub-district, Central Tapanuli District, North Sumatra, on early Wednesday morning.

The flooding also caused injuries to 22 people and inundated some 700 homes, Agus Haryanto, Secretary of the Central Tapanuli BPBD, confirmed on Wednesday. Related news: Nine dead in Central Tapanuli flash flood
