Since the beginning, they had had a history of ailments
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Nine convicted terrorists who died in prisons had a history of ailments before they were sent to jail, Director General of Correctional Facilities of the Law and Human Rights Ministry Sri Puguh Utami said. "Since the beginning, they had had a history of ailments," she said here on Thursday.

The ministry had done its utmost to treat the convicted terrorists before they died, she said.

Every correctional facility and detention house has doctors and paramedical workers to treat ill convicts, she said.

The Nusakambangan prison island off Central Java's southern coast has three doctors and four paramedical workers on duty, she said citing an example. Additionally, the correctional facility also cooperates with the Cilacap Regional General Hospital in treating ill prisoners.

"It is true we uphold the law. However, we do not neglect the protection of their human rights. Doctors are on standby there," she said.

Earlier, the House of Representatives (DPR) Commission III questioned the death of prisoners during a working meeting with the Law and Human Rights Ministry at the Parliament Building in Jakarta Tuesday, February 25.

Member of the House Commission III Muhammad Syafi'i disclosed that nine convicted terrorists with a high risk of ailments died in correctional facilities.

"I ask for clarification on their deaths. How were they treated?" he asked.
