Jakarta (ANTARA) - Afghan President Ashraf Ghani bestowed a “Malalai” medal of merit upon Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi, who was on a working visit to the Afghan capital of Kabul on Sunday, March 1, 2020.

"In honor of her unrelenting hard work to promote bilateral cooperation and build self-confidence between Indonesia and Afghanistan and create peace in the region and the world, I honorably bestow a Malalai medal of merit upon Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi," President Ghani stated.

Ghani made the remarks shortly before conferring the medal of merit on the Indonesian foreign minister, the Indonesian Foreign Ministry noted in a written statement released on Sunday.

Malalai is one of the medals of merit that the Afghan president bestows upon Afghan and international figures in recognition of their extraordinary contributions to Afghanistan.

Malalai was named after Afghan heroine Malalai Ana, who had led the Afghan people's struggle against the British colonial ruler in 1880.

At the meeting, Minister Marsudi reiterated Indonesia's commitment to help the peace process in Afghanistan, especially with regard to the two aspects of ulema dialog through the ulema conference in Indonesia scheduled for 2020 and women's empowerment through the Afghanistan-Indonesia Women Solidarity Networks.

"The Indonesian people will always stand together with the Afghan people to achieve eternal peace in Afghanistan," Marsudi added.
