Karawang, W Java (ANTARA) - Floods submerged thousands of hectares of paddy fields in Karawang District, West Java Province, over the past week, according to the local agriculture office.

"On an average, the flooded rice plantation is aged 1-95 HST (days after planting)," Chief of the Paddy Plant and Second Crop Protection Section of the Karawang District Agriculture Office Yuyu Yudaswarasaid stated on Monday.

Quoting data from the Karawang District Disaster Mitigation Office (BPBD), he said that the flooding affected 29 sub-districts over the past week owing to high rainfall that caused several rivers to overflow their banks.

He said the flooding had, so far, swamped 4,870 hectares of rice fields according to reports from 13 sub-districts.

"The size of flooded paddy fields will continue to increase. We are yet calculating the losses and waiting for reports from all flood-hit sub-districts,” he stated. Related news: Relief aid dispatched to Karawang and Subang flood victims
