Banyuwangi, E Java (ANTARA) - The Tunu Pratama Jaya roll-on/roll-off vessel carrying 12 crew members, 53 passengers, and 22 cars capsized in the rough waters off Bali Island on Wednesday evening, a rescuer said.

"The vessel departed from Ketapang Port in Banyuwangi District, East Java, to Bali's Gilimanuk Port at 10.56 p.m. and reportedly sank at 11.35 p.m.," Wahyu Setia Budi, coordinator of the Banyuwangi SAR agency, said.

According to the ship manifest, the MV Tunu Pratama Jaya carried 53 passengers, 12 crew members, and 22 cars, he added.

Several fatal accidents have continued to challenge Indonesia's reputation in transportation safety over the past seven years during which the country had borne witness to a series of fatal accidents.

On Wednesday, June 25, 2025, for instance, a long boat carrying 13 soccer players capsized off the waters of Selat Nenek Island near Batam City, Riau Islands. Ten people survived the accident while three others reportedly went missing.

On June 18, 2018, MV Sinar Bangun with 202 passengers on board had met its watery grave at the bottom of Lake Toba in North Sumatra Province.

Consequently, three passengers lost their lives, while 164 others had gone missing. There were only 21 survivors of the tragedy that struck at a time when the Indonesian government was making all-out efforts for promoting Lake Toba to be one of the 10 priority destinations "Beyond Bali."
