"Energy diversification is no longer optional. It is vital, it is necessary. We must move faster. We must go through alternative sources and we must prepare renewables," he said at the plenary session of the 48th ASEAN Summit at Mactan Expo, Cebu, Philippines, on Friday.
In a statement on Friday, the head of state highlighted that the current dynamics of geopolitical tensions have triggered prolonged disruptions to key global logistics routes.
This situation is considered to be putting significant pressure on the stability of energy supplies in various countries including those in Southeast Asia.
He noted that the pressure on the global energy situation is unlikely to subside anytime soon and thus demands collective preparedness.
Prabowo then emphasized that regional energy security should not be built reactively but rather must be prepared proactively through thorough future-oriented planning.
In his view the regional bloc should move more progressively in seeking alternative energy sources and expanding the use of renewable energy.
Strengthening preparedness to face various possible global scenarios is key to maintaining the energy sovereignty of each member state he added.
Prabowo then outlined several concrete steps the Indonesian government has taken to strengthen national energy security.
Indonesia is currently focusing on developing bioenergy as well as accelerating the use of electric vehicles and utilizing various other renewable resources as part of the energy transition.
A key point highlighted by the president was the national strategic initiative to build a large-scale solar power program.
Indonesia targets significant capacity to strengthen energy independence and cut fossil fuel reliance in the short term.
"We are building a very ambitious 100-gigawatt solar energy program that we want to complete within three years," he disclosed to the audience.
At the summit Indonesia reaffirmed its commitment to playing an active role in strengthening the regional energy architecture.
This measure is taken to support the transition to a cleaner energy system and a more self-sufficient region amidst uncertain global dynamics.
