Jakarta (ANTARA) - Kebon Pala residential area in Kampung Melayu, East Jakarta, was flooded on Sunday in the wee hours, as Ciliwung River spilled over its banks following heavy rains in Bogor, West Java, which is some 60 km from Jakarta.

The flood waters reaching a height of up to 50 centimeters entered local inhabitants' homes at 2 a.m. local time, Beben (41), a Kebon Pala resident, said here on Sunday morning.

The flooding in Kebon Pala was caused by water current coming from Bogor via Ciliwung River.

The East Jakarta residents were alerted on Saturday afternoon when the water level in Katulampa sluice gate reached 170 cm on Saturday at 6 p.m..

The water from Katulampa was later released to the estuary on the Jakarta coast via Ciliwung River.

Kebon Pala area is one of a few residential areas located along the Ciliwung riverbanks.

Most the flood-affected Kepon Pala inhabitants did not evacuate themselves to higher ground as the flood waters receded at around 6 a.m. on Sunday.
