Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Wisma Atlet Emergency Hospital in Kemayoran, Jakarta, is currently treating 837 patients, of which 723 have tested positive for the novel coronavirus, while 114 others are categorized as patients and people under surveillance status.

Some 58 are grouped as patients under surveillance (PDP), while the remaining 58 are people under monitoring status (ODP), Commander of the Joint Regional Defense Command (Kogabwilhan) I Vice Admiral Yudo Margono stated in Jakarta on Monday.

This emergency hospital, with a total capacity to handle 12 thousand patients, was officially inaugurated by President Joko Widodo on March 23 as part of Indonesia's endeavors to fight the coronavirus pandemic.

The Indonesian government also set up another emergency hospital in Galang Island, Riau Islands Province. The Galang Emergency Hospital, officially operated since April 6, 2020, is treating 32 confirmed COVID-19 patients and 11 people under surveillance.

The coronavirus disease, which initially struck the Chinese city of Wuhan by the end of 2019, has since then spread to various countries across the world.

According to media reports, as of April 27, at least 2.99 million people had contracted the COVID-19 infection, while 206,992 of them died, and 878,820 others fully recovered from the virus.

Indonesia recorded at least 8,882 confirmed cases, while death toll from the virus touched 743, and 1,107 patients received discharge from hospitals after fully recovering from the coronavirus that had severely affected the economies of so many countries.

On account of COVID-19 infections spreading to all 34 provinces in Indonesia, President Joko Widodo has declared the coronavirus outbreak a national disaster.

In dealing with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, several cities in the country, including Jakarta, Surabaya, Makassar, and Pekanbaru, have enforced large-scale social restrictions and distancing measures.

Indonesia's capital city, Jakarta, remains the epicenter of the virus that has severely affected the economies of so many countries across the globe.

In Banda Aceh, the capital of Aceh Province in the northernmost tip of Sumatra Island, the local authorities have imposed a curfew to contain the spread of the virus by preventing locals from venturing outside for unimportant activities.
