For export top commodities, we still rely on shrimp export
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Marine Affairs and Fisheries Ministry has planned to develop Sukabumi District in West Java as a model for sustainable shrimp farming in Indonesia.

The ministry's Director General of Aquaculture Slamet Soebijakto said in a statement here on Sunday, the development of sustainable shrimp farming is aimed to increase shrimp export by 250 percent in 2024.

Shrimp is the largest contributor of foreign exchange to the national fishery export after tuna fish, he said. "For export top commodities, we still rely on shrimp export."

Shrimp export value in 2019 has contributed 39 percent to the national fishery export. The export is targeted to increase by 250 percent in 2024, hence in 2020 the ministry has started to boost production, Soebijakto said.

According to Soebijakto, the ministry and other related institutions has designed the road map for the development of national shrimp farming.

"The road map is ready for implementation. Shrimp has become one national priority, there must be an integrated effort to support the development," he added.

For the short term concrete measures, the ministry has designed the development of a model for sustainable shrimp farming in potential regions, including Sukabumi.

"The target of the project is to increase production while remain environmental friendly. The prospective location of the project would be in Tegal Beuleut Subdistrict," he said.

The success in managing the pilot project could be copied by farmers and is expected to attract investors, he said.

"The good news is some private sectors have eyed the business in some regions such as West Sulawesi, Central Sulawesi, South Sulawesi, North Sulawesi and Gorontalo," Soebijakto said.
