Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Bank Indonesia (BI) Consumer Survey in May 2020 showed continued weakening of consumer optimism over economic conditions, as was mirrored in the Consumer Confidence Index (IKK) of 77.8, lower from 84.8 in April 2020.

"Weakening consumer optimism occurs in all categories of respondents, both according to expenditure levels and age group categories," BI Communication Department Executive Director Onny Widjanarko noted in a statement in Jakarta on Friday.

Spatially, consumer confidence dipped in the 14 cities surveyed, with the steepest drop in Manado City, followed by Mataram and Ambon.

Consumer optimism dipped chiefly owing to a decline in consumer perceptions on the current economic conditions, with the sharpest drop in the current employment availability index.

On the expectations side, consumers remain relatively optimistic of the forecast of economic conditions in the subsequent six months, albeit not as strong as the previous month's projection.

Consumers also remain quite optimistic of the projected availability of improved employment and rising income in the next six months in accordance with forecasts for respite from the COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesia.
