The verdict of the judiciary panel, headed by Judge Masrizal, was lighter than the prosecutors’ demand for a 16-year prison term for Alamsyah and 13-year jail term for his wife.
Alamsyah accepted the verdict read out by the panel of judges during the court proceeding on Thursday for the Wiranto attack case. The proceedings for the case had commenced in April 2020.
Alamsyah was arrested after attempting to stab Wiranto at the Menes Square area of Purwaraja Village, Menes Sub-district, Pandeglang District, on Oct 10, 2019. Wiranto's assistant shielded him when the attacker tried to assault him with a knife.
Shortly after the attack, Wiranto, who reportedly got injured, was rushed to Pandeglang District's Berkah Public Hospital to receive emergency medical treatment. He was then moved to the Gatot Subroto Army Hospital (RSPAD) in Central Jakarta.
Indonesia's political elites have denounced the attack.
People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) Speaker Bambang Soesatyo denounced the assault on Indonesia's top security minister, hinting at it being an early warning for the National Police.
Soesatyo highlighted the need for the police investigators to investigate and unearth the motives behind the perpetrators of the knife attack on Wiranto, who was the coordinating minister for political, legal, and security affairs at that time.
The MPR speaker opined that the attack on Wiranto, conducted 10 days before President-elect Joko Widodo and running mate, Ma'ruf Amin, were sworn in respectively as Indonesia's president and vice president for the 2019-2024 term on October 20, 2019, was in fact an early caveat for the police. However, ANTARA noted that suspected terrorists were also behind frequent assaults on police personnel.
On June 1, 2020, a lone wolf had assaulted Brigadier Leonardo Latupapua, a policeman of the Daha Selatan police precinct in South Kalimantan Province. Latupapua succumbed to grave injuries following the early morning attack.
On June 21, a man had launched a surprise attack with a machete on Second Brigadier Hanif Ariyono, a driver of Deputy Chief of Karanganyar Police Commissioner Busroni's official vehicle in Karanganyar District, Central Java Province.
Indonesia has been targeted by terrorists since 2000, and the radicalism and terrorism remain an omnipresent threat to the nation.
