"Starting from 3 p.m. local time (on Wednesday), the number of cars leaving Jakarta for Bandung and Central Java has risen. This night, the toll road was busy, and we applied a contraflow traffic system from the kilometer-47 mark to kilometer-61 markJakarta (ANTARA) - The police highlighted that the number of cars departing from Jakarta before the long weekend had begun to increase on Wednesday evening.
Until early Thursday, the number of cars leaving the capital continued to rise, and the police applied a contraflow traffic system to ease congestion from the kilometer-47 mark to kilometer-61 mark of the Jakarta-Cikampek toll road, Chief of the Traffic Corps Division of the National Police Senior Commissioner Rudi Antariksawan noted in a press statement released early Thursday.
"Starting from 3 p.m. local time (on Wednesday), the number of cars leaving Jakarta for Bandung and Central Java has risen. This night, the toll road was busy, and we applied a contraflow traffic system from the kilometer-47 mark to kilometer-61 mark for motorists heading for Bandung and Central Java," he noted.
The government has declared Friday a collective leave day, in addition to the Islamic New Year on Thursday, Aug 20, to create a four-day weekend.
Antariksawan said the contraflow traffic system was applied to offer a sense of security to motorists and to maintain smooth movement of traffic. It will be extended in the event of rising congestion.
"Hence, it will be able to speed up traffic flow, both at the meeting point of the elevated toll road and toll road beneath it. If it still cannot ease the flow of traffic, we will begin a contraflow traffic system from the kilometer-29 mark," he stated.
Antariksawan noted that no congestion occurred while cars left Jakarta owing to the Land Transportation Director General's policy restricting the number of three-axle cargo vehicles travelling on the toll road.
