The index of the Indonesian Stock Exchange (BEI) closed 9.66 points lower, down 0.18 percent, at 5,230.2, while the index of the 45 most liquid stocks fell 1.63 points, or 0.2 percent, to 823.99.
"The IHSG still remains in the red zone due to the upward trend in global and domestic COVID-19 cases, coupled with the escalation of US-China bilateral trade tensions and a lack of global macroeconomic data that has a high market impact,"Binaartha Sekuritas analyst M Nafan Aji Gusta Utama said on Monday.
After opening lower in morning trade, the IHSG remained unable to move away from the negative territory until the close of trade.
On a sectoral basis, shares of four sectors showed a correction, with the financial sector falling deeper at minus 1.05 percent, followed by the agricultural sector at minus 0.97 percent, and the various industrial sector at minus 0.22 percent.
Meanwhile, shares of six sectors rose, with the basic industrial sector recording the highest increase of 1.53 percent, followed by the manufacturing sector at 0.46 percent, and the infrastructure sector at 0.4 percent.
Net foreign purchase by investors reached Rp786.9 billion.
As per trade data, 604,588 transactions were recorded on Monday, with 9.88 billion shares, valued at Rp6.07 trillion, changing hands. Gainers were outnumbered by decliners, with 189 shares climbing against 222 shares falling, and 179 shares remaining unchanged.
Regional markets weakened on Monday evening, with the Nikkei index sliding 115.48 points, or 0.5 percent, to 23,089.95, and the Hang Seng index plunging 105.8 points, or 0.43 percent, to 24,589.65. In contrast, the Straits Times index rose 2.93 points, or 0.16 percent, to 2,512.67.
