It is true that there has been a shooting and torture incident leading to the death of two people in two different places in Sugapa district, Intan Jaya regencyJayapura, Papua (ANTARA) - An armed civilian group has reportedly tortured and killed two people in Sugapa district in the easternmost Indonesian province of Papua on Thursday.
“It is true that there has been a shooting and torture incident leading to the death of two people in two different places in Sugapa district, Intan Jaya regency,” commander of the District Military Command, Brigadier General Iwan Setiawan, told ANTARA over cellular phone.
The murder of the two people is the latest in a series of incidents that have claimed the lives of innocent people in Papua.
On August 26, 2020, a group of local residents armed with spears, machetes, and logs assaulted and killed a 31-year-old man identified as, Yausan, in Yahukimo, Papua.
Yausan had boarded a pick-up truck loaded with batako bricks along with two other residents when the group of local residents assaulted them.
Earlier, two innocent civilians were also assaulted and killed in Yahukimo.
Police spokesperson, Sen. Coms. A. M. Kamal, said in a statement recently that the two other civilians murdered two weeks ago were a member of Yahukimo district's General Elections Commission (KPU) Office and a carpenter.
The Papua Police recorded that during the period from early January to December 28, 2019, a total of 23 shootings and criminal cases involving armed Papuan groups had claimed the lives of 10 members of the Indonesian police and military as well as 10 civilians.
