We have raised their status, from witnesses to suspects, and they are charged under article 426 of the Criminal Code
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Jakarta Metropolitan Police named two officers of the Tangerang class 1 correctional facility as suspects in the escape of a Chinese death row drug convict from prison last month.

"We have raised their status, from witnesses to suspects, and they are charged under article 426 of the Criminal Code," Chief of the Public Relations Bureau of the Jakarta Police Senior Commissioner Yusri Yunus stated here on Tuesday.

Yunus remarked that after conducting a preliminary hearing, the police had named them as suspects over their negligence that led to the Chinese convict Cai Changpan, alias Cai Ji Fan, escaping from the facility.

The officers allegedly helped Changpan to flee by providing tools to dig a tunnel that connected to a sewer.

"We found evidence that the suspects had helped the convict to escape by providing a water pump when he dug (the tunnel). The convict (Cai Changpan) ordered the tools from the two officers," he revealed.

Changpan escaped from the correctional facility on Sept 14, 2020, through a sewer connected to the tunnel that he had dug out.

The police questioned 14 witnesses in connection with Changpan’s escape.

The police believe that the convict hid in the Tenjo Forest in Bogor District, West Java, located in proximity to his house.

Changpan was once spotted in a village to purchase food items and thereafter disappeared again in the forest. With his military training background in China, the police opined that he was capable of surviving in the forest.

The Jakarta Police have deployed the Mobile Brigade to hunt down the Chinese death row drug convict.

In addition to the manhunt, the police have come up with a wanted list bearing the photograph of the Chinese national.

The public can furnish information on the convict’s hideouts to the Tangerang Metro Police by contacting telephone number: 081253178671.
