Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Environment and Forestry officially opened the 2020 Climate Festival as part of the endeavors to publicize about Indonesia's climate control policy.

"The festival is aimed at disseminating information on strategic policies pertaining to climate control in Indonesia as well as the achievements," Vice Minister of Environment and Forestry Alue Dohong stated during a virtual press conference in Jakarta on Wednesday.

The 2020 Climate Festival also marks five years since the establishment of the Directorate General of Climate Change Control (Ditjen PPI) as part of the ministry.

Dohong remarked that the event was also held to mark the implementation of commitments from the Paris Agreement that Indonesia had ratified through State Law Number 16 of 2016 on the Ratification of the Paris Agreement to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

The vice minister emphasized the crucial role of the Directorate General of Climate Change Control in fulfilling Indonesia's Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) commitment to lower greenhouse gas emissions, with the country's own efforts constituting 29 percent, while international assistance comprising 41 percent.

Dohong believes that implementation of the NDC commitment started this year, and the Directorate General of Climate Change Control had played a crucial role in garnering participation and contribution from all stakeholders and not solely state actors, such as ministries and institutions, but also the general society, academics, and mass media.

"This is for us to push our target, as agreed in the NDC, and ensure that we can achieve it optimally," he affirmed.

The 2020 Climate Festival, themed "Strengthening Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation Actions in the Recovery Period post the COVID-19 Pandemic," will be held on October 7-27. Some of its activities comprise a series of webinars on current issues and virtual exhibitions based on the theme of climate change.
