The houses were located in two villages in two sub-districts, acting day-to-day chief of the Central Mamuju District Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), Awaluddin, said.
Kampung Baru hamlet in Kuo village of Pangale sub-district was hit the hardest, with eight houses in the hamlet damaged by the quake, he said.
"In Kuo village, particularly Kampung Baru hamlet, eight houses occupied by 23 people were damaged. In general, the houses suffered minor damage," he informed.
The quake damaged two homes in Barakkang village, Budong-budong sub-district, he added.
The quake was also felt in the provincial capital of Mamuju early on Wednesday and forced panic-stricken residents to rush outdoors.
It was soon followed by another quake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale.
The epicenter of the first quake, which occurred at 3:43 a.m. local time, was located 34 kilometers southwest of Central Mamuju district at a depth of 10 kilometers, spokesperson for the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) station in Majene district, Setiawan SR, remarked.
The second quake, which struck at 6:50 a.m. local time, was centered 48 kilometers northeast of Mamuju City and was located at a depth of 19 kilometers, he noted.
No tsunami warning was issued following the earthquakes.
There were no immediate reports of injuries and fatalities.
Earthquakes of magnitude 5.4 and 5.0 on the Richter scale can cause considerable damage to land.
