Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) remains steadfast and unwavering in supporting the development of decent, productive, and sustainable cities in Indonesia.

City development should align with the principles of being decent, productive, environment-friendly, and sustainable to proffer benefits to the future generations, PUPR Minister Basuki Hadimuljono stated here on Monday.

"The PUPR Ministry remains committed in adhering to the principles of environment-based and sustainable infrastructure development, starting from the stages of survey, investigation, design, land acquisition, and construction, to operation and maintenance," he noted in a statement.

The Ministry of PUPR has constantly encouraged urban planning programs through various forms of infrastructure development based on regional approaches.

The ministry formulates city planning on the basis of its heritage assets and areas, as well as historic buildings and the culture of residents.

In 2019, the ministry had concluded the work of renovating the Old City of Semarang in Central Java that spans an area of 22.2 hectares.

This program is the driving force behind the development of Semarang City as a livable and sustainable heritage city in addition to boosting the potential of the local economy and tourism sector.

Furthermore, the ministry has improved the quality of urban slum areas through a program called the City Without Slum Program (Kotaku).

In 2020, Kotaku will be implemented through the Cash Work Intensive Program in 364 urban villages in 34 provinces in Indonesia, with a budget of Rp429.5 billion.

Cities also need apt and integrated infrastructure to boost productivity of the economic sector.

In 2020, the ministry has intensified the implementation of drinking water availability and sanitation programs through various approaches, including by providing community-based drinking water and sanitation (pamsimas) at 4,717 locations, with a budget of Rp1.12 trillion, and community-based sanitation (sanimas) at 1,028 locations, at a budget of Rp391 billion.
