Jayapura (ANTARA) - Political campaigns ahead of the regional elections (Pilkada 2020) in 11 districts of Papua have been running safely through the implementation of COVID-19 health protocols at all stages, spokesperson for the Papua Regional Police said.

"According to the monitoring process managed by district police officials within the Papua Regional Police working area, candidate campaigns in 11 districts are running safely in such conducive circumstances," Police Grand Commissioner Achmad Musthofa Kamal said in Jayapura on Thursday.

Some of the 11 areas have also held debates during which candidates have outlined their election goals.

The campaigning period will end on December 5, 2020, and will be followed by a three-day election silence before voting begins on December 9. As many as 11,691 joint personnel will be deployed to safeguard the elections.

"If there is any side that is dissatisfied with the election result or has issues at any stage of the whole process, it may take legal action, but should not organize mass gathering as we are currently still fighting the COVID-19 pandemic," Kamal cautioned.

The areas that will hold regional as well as local leaders elections next month include the districts of Yahukimo, Merauke, Keerom, Mamberamo Raya, Pegunungan Bintang, Boven Digoel, Supiori, Nabire, Yalimo, Asmat, and Waropen.
