Medan, N Sumatra (ANTARA) - More than 500 kiosks in Berastagi market, Karo district, North Sumatra province, caught fire early on Tuesday, but no fatalities were reported in the incident.

Eight fire trucks were dispatched to extinguish the blaze that ravaged about 90 percent of 535 kiosks in the market, head of Karo district's Fire Department, Teguh Purba, said.

The Berastagi market houses traders selling a variety of goods, including clothing and footwear, staple foods, vegetable, fish, and meat, Purba said.

A lack of water supply for the fire-fighting operation stymied efforts by the fire-fighters to put out the blaze quickly, he added.

Police are probing the cause of the fire, which caused huge material losses to traders, he said.

Berastagi is a popular tourist destination located about 66 kilometers from Medan, the capital of North Sumatra province. (INE)
