Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) Ministry has apportioned Rp52.5 billion for self-help housing stimulant (BSPS) or the house renovation program in North Kalimantan Province.

"Through the BSPS program, the government will encourage people to help one another to improve the quality of their housing amid the COVID-19 pandemic. We have attempted to maximize the BSPS program," the ministry's Director General of Housing, Khalawi Abdul Hamid, noted in a statement here on Tuesday.

Under the BSPS program in 2020, the ministry will conduct renovation of three thousand non-livable houses (RTLH) in five districts and municipalities in North Kalimantan: Tarakan City, Bulungan District, Malinau District, Nunukan District, and Tana Tidung District.

Director of Self-help Housing of the ministry Arsyad stated that the program in North Kalimantan will be divided into two stages, under which 1,500 houses were renovated in the first stage.

The work to renovate the remaining 1,500 houses was 93 percent complete, with targeted completion in December 2020.

Under the program, each RTLH will receive Rp17.5 million, of which Rp15 million will be channeled to procure building material and Rp2.5 million utilized for workers' wages.

As of October 2020, the ministry had built 601,637 houses under its one million houses program.

"We are optimistic of the one million houses program running optimally despite the COVID-19 pandemic. As of the third quarter of 2020 on October 21, the one million houses program had covered 601,637 houses," Hamid revealed.

Hamid believes that the renovation of RTLH would help to improve the quality of public health.
