Medan, N Sumatra (ANTARA) - Hundreds of flood victims in Tanjung Selamat village, Sunggal sub-district, Deli Serdang district, North Sumatra province, underwent swab tests for COVID-19 on Saturday. “This morning, Mr. Governor (North Sumatra Governor Edy Rahmayadi) came here and recommended that all flood victims should take swab tests,” chief of Sei Mencirim Public Health Service Post (Puskesmas), Dr. Juliani, said at the refugee command post at Arhanud Battalion.

The swab test is part of precautionary measures to avert the spread of the novel coronavirus disease, particularly in the refugee camp, she informed.

To conduct swab testing, Puskesmas cooperated with the North Sumatra Provincial Health Office and the Deli Serdang District Health Office, she said.

Refugees who are found positive for COVID-19 will immediately carry out self-isolation, she added.

"There are 350 refugees here. We will try to conduct swab tests on all of them. May the results be good," she informed.

A flash flood swept through some parts of the North Sumatran city of Medan and its outskirts on Friday.

The flood, which was triggered by the overflowing of the Belawan River following rain in the affected areas early on Friday, killed five residents of Tanjung Selamat village, Sunggal sub-district head Ismail informed.

Over the past two months, North Sumatra has recorded at least two flash floods. On November 18, 2020, a flash flood destroyed a suspension bridge along with 13 wooden and bamboo kiosks at the Bukit Lawang tourist resort in Langkat district.

The flash flood was caused by the overflowing of the Landak River. (INE)
