The drug raid operation, recently launched by the police to follow up on information by the Indonesian customs and excise office on a suspected package from Germany, also led to two suspects being arrested.
The duo had only been identified by their initials as JJ and MSF, Central Jakarta Police Chief Sen. Coms. Heru Novianto stated here on Tuesday.
The drug package, marked with a barcode CY-285 509 429 DE, was packed along with children's toys to camouflage it, he revealed.
MSF confessed to police investigators of having taken drug packages sent from Germany at the Fatmawati post office and Jakarta's central post office eight times, Novianto remarked.
MSF, arrested at the Fatmawati post office, came clean about having worked for JJ. During a raid at JJ's house, the police officers found several DHL cardboards, children's toys, and a digital scale.
The police charged JJ for violating Article 144, Point 2 and Article 112, Point 2 of Indonesia's Drug Law No. 35 of 1999. If found guilty, JJ could be sentenced to 20 years in prison.
Indonesia's capital city, Jakarta, remains vulnerable to transnational drug trafficking operations.
In December 2020, the Jakarta Metropolitan Police apprehended 11 suspects for smuggling 201 kilograms (kg) of crystal methamphetamine from the Middle East into Indonesia.
The suspects were arrested at the WIR Hotel in the Petamburan neighborhood, Central Jakarta, from whom the cops seized 196 packs of crystal meth weighing 201 kg.
Domestic and transnational drug dealers perceive Indonesia as a potential market owing to its vast population and millions of drug users. Drug trade in the nation is valued at nearly Rp66 trillion.
People from all strata of society are falling prey to drugs, regardless of their socio-economic and professional backgrounds.
The Indonesian government has taken harsh punitive action against drug kingpins found smuggling and trading drugs in the country over the past few decades.
Despite National Narcotics Agency (BNN) Chief Commissioner General Heru Winarko having sought capital punishment for those involved in drug trade in the country, National Police Chief, General Idham Azis, affirmed that Indonesian district courts had awarded capital punishment to at least 100 drug offenders in the first half of 2020.
