Sumenep, E Java (ANTARA) - Three men sustained burns after their motorboat exploded without warning while undergoing repairs at Raas port in Sumenep district, East Java on Saturday.

"The three crew members who fell victim to the explosion have been rushed to a nearby public health service post," chief of the public relations section of the Sumenep district police, Adjunct Commissioner Widiarti, informed.

The district police have sent officers to the scene to gather evidence, he added.

In the explosion, which is believed to have been caused by an LPG cylinder, ripped the boat to pieces on Saturday morning, the three crew members sustained burns and bone fractures, he said.

The boat had been moored at the port for repairs and its engine was not running at the time of the incident, he added.

The three crew members, identified as Syaiful (34), Hosen (28), and Adi (25), are residents of Brakas village, Raas sub-district.

Police are questioning witnesses in the case.
