Deputy chief of East Java Police, Brigadier General Slamet Hadi Supraptoyo, said the 22 suspects were apprehended from several parts of East Java, such as Surabaya, Sidoarjo, Mojokerto, Bojonegoro, and Malang.
"Meanwhile, what we got from the interrogation was (that they belong to) the JI (Jamaah Islamiyah) group," he informed.
Furthermore, they had remained in contact with one another, he added.
According to the suspects’ provisional statements, at the time of arrest, they were yet to map out the exact targets of action as they were still focusing on recruiting members.
"And during five years, they found 50 people (members) that their group could recruit," Supraptoyo informed.
Following the arrests, the East Java Regional Police have decided to carry out investigations and monitoring around the locations of the arrests on an ongoing basis, he added.
Supraptoyo said police will not allow any act of terror in their jurisdiction.
“We will definitely carry out territorial security activities from 39 police resorts in East Java," he stressed. (INE)
