Jakarta (ANTARA) - Communication and Informatics Minister Johnny G. Plate has urged people to not upload their COVID-19 vaccination certificates on social media platforms to ensure protection of personal data.

"When we receive vaccinations and use applications, including the PeduliLindungi application, with the barcode in there, I especially urge the people to not post the certificates on social media platforms in order to protect personal data. We use (the certificate) for its designated purpose," the minister noted in a press statement, Friday.

Apart from refraining from posting on social media, Plate also called on the public to not share scans of the vaccination certificates with those around them. "I certainly hope that the vaccine certificate that is digitally issued with a barcode is in our own interest, and we protect it, so that we can avoid leaks of personal data," he emphasized.

The COVID-19 vaccination certificate can only be used for special or urgent scenarios, for instance, for travel purposes or for work.

"It is not meant to be circulated on social media," he stressed.

The government, along with the House of Representatives, are discussing the Bill on Personal Data Protection, to protect people's personal data.

"In particular, in this case, we need the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) or the PDP Law. I believe that Commission I of the House has the same intention and spirit to complete this legal umbrella for the protection of the people's personal data," he added.

Plate sought for safeguarding personal data at all times, although the law had not been passed.

It was not the first time that Plate had issued such an appeal, as since the COVID-19 vaccination was administered to the public, he had several times reminded vaccine recipients to not upload their vaccination certificates on social media.

People vaccinated against COVID-19 will receive a digital certificate through the PeduliLindungi application. The certificate contains personal data: full name, date of birth and national identification number.

Apart from personal data, the COVID-19 vaccination certificate also has a barcode and QR code that should not be shared casually.
