Senator Sjah, who is the Sultan of Tidore, said here on Thursday that the event would be a historic one for the city under the leadership Mayor Ali Ibrahim and Deputy Mayor Muhammad Sinen, as it would garner national and international attention.
The peak event of Sail Tidore, part of a series of Sail Indonesia events organized annually by the Indonesian government to promote tourism, is scheduled to be held in September, 2021.
Sail Tidore has been timed to coincide with the 500th anniversary of the first circumnavigation of the world, attempted by Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan.
As part of the event, Spain's Juan Sebastian De Elcano training ship is scheduled to dock at Tugulufa beach, Tidore, on March 27, 2021.

"Sail Tidore, of course, is part of the commemoration of 500 years of Juan Sebastian De Elcano's journey around the world. This event is a great honor for Tidore. Hence, it should become a model and be welcomed because people in other countries still remember and take good care of their history's meaning and value, " Sjah remarked.
He also called on the people of Tidore to take the example of other nations, which preserve and guard their history for future generations.
The Sultan said he and the Sultanate officials will personally greet the Juan Sebastian De Elcano training vessel upon its arrival on Tidore beach.
Ferdinand Magellan had organized the Spanish expedition to the East Indies from 1519 to 1522, with five ships provided by King Charles V, resulting in the first circumnavigation of the Earth.
The explorer died in the Battle of Mactan, the Philippines, on April 27, 1521. The circumnavigation of Magellan was later completed by Juan Sebastian Elcano, a Spanish explorer.
