Literacy ability is the core ability that becomes a stepping stone for someone to create a better life for himself or for many people.
Jakarta (ANTARA) - House of Representatives’ speaker Puan Maharani highlighted that the Indonesian women play an active and crucial role in enhancing literacy culture, especially at the family level, in pursuit of the advancement of Indonesians.

“Literacy ability is the core ability that becomes a stepping stone for someone to create a better life for himself or for many people,” the speaker noted at a talk show to commemorate Kartini Day held online by the National Library here on Tuesday.

Maharani highlighted that the family is the smallest public unit though plays a significant role in the nation’s progress, as it is the starting point of a person’s life, and women’s role in it is central and significant.

If literacy culture is instilled earlier at the family level, the members will grow up with those strong values, she emphasized.

“If the culture of reading is made a habit at home, then children will become accustomed to resorting to books or other reading sources as references to obtain information,” Maharani remarked.

Literacy skills, such as reading, writing, processing, and understanding information, enable an individual to absorb abundant knowledge, she stated.

In addition, someone can generate ideas, think critically, and develop crucial problem-solving skills.

“If RA Kartini (Indonesian heroine) did not possess the requisite literacy ability, the book ‘Habis Gelap Terbitlah Terang’ (out of darkness comes light) would not have ever existed. The contents have hugely inspired ‘the Kartinis’ across generations until today,” she pointed out.

Maharani, a politician of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), comprehends that efforts to hone literacy ability is not an easy task, and scores of mothers don dual roles of being a housewife and a worker.

However, the speaker expressed belief that Indonesian women must be creative, come up with several ideas, and find ways to boost the literacy ability either in the family or society.

“Put forth a big problem to Indonesian women, and Insya Allah (God’s will), they can find the solutions,” she affirmed. Related news: Women's role crucial in struggle of indigenous people: AMAN
