Jarunis has taken care of it since it was still a baby. He bought it from an animal market and named it after Tiwi
Pekanbaru, Riau (ANTARA) - The Riau Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) evacuated an agile gibbon to its transit cage before releasing this endangered primate back into its natural habitat.

This gibbon was handed over to the BKSDA officials by Jarunis, a resident of the Rumbai neighborhood area in Pekanbaru City. Jarunis had taken care of the primate for six years.

"Jarunis has taken care of it since it was still a baby. He bought it from an animal market and named it after Tiwi," BKSDA-Riau Office spokesperson Dian stated here on Monday.

Dian remarked that Jarunis was aware of the fact that his agile gibbon was an endangered animal, so he was willing for its release back into the natural environment.

To this end, he contacted BKSDA officials, who then evacuated the primate to the agency's transit cage for medical care prior to its release.

"When Tiwi was evacuated, its health condition was not good enough," she revealed.

In 2008, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) placed "Owa Ungko," or the agile gibbon, on the list of endangered primates due to habitat destruction and pet trade.

This black and red-brown primate is naturally found in Indonesia's Sumatra Island, Malaysia, and southern part of Thailand.
