Mukomuko, Bengkulu (ANTARA) - The National Narcotics Agency (BNN) has arrested a police officer in Mukomuko district, Bengkulu province, on charges of trafficking drugs over a period of five years.

The officer has been identified as 1st Adjunct Inspector ES, 43, the BNN-Bengkulu Office head, Brig.Gen.Toga Habinsar Panjaitan, informed here on Tuesday.

The agency’s officers recently conducted a raid and arrested ES for allegedly trafficking crystal methamphetamine and marijuana in Mukomuko district, Bengkulu province, for years, he said.

The agency's investigators will continue their probe into the drug case, he added.

Owing to his status, the suspect will also be questioned by the Bengkulu provincial police's internal affairs division (Propam), Panjaitan said.

ES has told BNN investigators that he obtained the drugs from one DB, a 32-year-old resident of Ipuh sub-district, Mukomuko district, and J, a resident of Kepahiang district.

If found guilty by Propam, ES would be dismissed from police service, Panjaitan said.

Domestic and transnational drug dealers see Indonesia as a potential market owing to its large population and millions of drug users.

Drug trade in Indonesia is valued at almost Rp66 trillion.

Data indicates that Indonesians from all strata of society are falling prey to drugs regardless of their socio-economic and professional background.

In February this year, the West Java Police's Propam detained 12 cops, including the chief of the Astanaanyar district police precinct, for alleged narcotic consumption.

In November last year, a police officer in Deli Serdang district, North Sumatra province was sacked over his involvement in a drug-related offense.

The dismissal of Chief Brigadier FS was announced during a roll call led by deputy chief of the Deli Serdang Police Precinct, Adjunct Sen. Coms. Julianto P. Sirait, on November 23, 2020.

"Through this roll call, it is declared that Chief Brigadier FS is longer a police officer," Sirait said.

In June last year, another policeman was arrested for consuming drugs at a hotel in Mataram, the capital of West Nusa Tenggara province.

The policeman, identified as EW, and three other people were reportedly caught consuming crystal methamphetamine during a raid and placed under police custody. Nineteen grams of crystal meth was also seized during the raid.

In July, 2020, at least 260 policemen in South Sumatra underwent a rehabilitation program to recover from drug addiction. (INE)
