Jakarta (ANTARA) - State-owned shipbuilding company PT PAL Indonesia inked a cooperation agreement with Swedish defense equipment producer BAE Systems BOFORS AB for warship maintenance, repair, and overhaul.

PT PAL Indonesia President Director Kaharuddin Djenod and BAE Systems BOFORS AB CEO Lena Gillström signed the cooperation agreement virtually and was borne witness by Indonesian Ambassador to Sweden and Latvia, Kamapradipta Isnomo on Thursday (May 27), the Indonesian Embassy in Stockholm noted in a written statement released on Friday.

The cooperation agreement will provide Indonesian warships and patrol ships using the BOFORS technology with access to repair and maintenance at PT PAL Indonesia instead of in Sweden.

The cooperation also involves transfer of technology and knowledge in which experts and engineers of BOFORS and PT. PAL will cooperate in ship maintenance and repair.

The Indonesian Embassy in Stockholm will intensively monitor negotiations on the implementation of the cooperation agreement in order to comply with the national regulations and enable BOFORS to have a binding working partner in Indonesia.

BOFORS initiated the cooperation at the end of 2020 to establish cooperation with PT PAL in the field of ship maintenance, repair, and overhaul through the Teaming Agreement Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (TA MRO).

In his address at the signing of the cooperation agreement, the ambassador affirmed that TA MRO will potentially pioneer progress in defense cooperation between Indonesia and Sweden.

He highlighted that the embassy will continue to prioritize the format of cooperation in enhancing bilateral cooperation between both nations.
