Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) is developing a geodiversity zone in Karangsambung, Kebumen district, Central Java province using SBSN (State Sharia Securities) financing of Rp145 billion.

"In this zone, three buildings will be built, namely a geodiversity building, a geoconservation building, and a dormitory building," LIPI's deputy for earth sciences, Prof. Ocky Karna Radjasa, said at a national webinar on ‘Geodiversity Builds the Nation’, originating from here on Thursday.

Construction on the project began in 2020 and is expected to be complete in 2021, or within 400 working days, he informed.

The Karangsambung geodiversity zone, which is being built on an area of 35 thousand square meters, will house a geodiversity building covering an area of 3,674 square meters, a geoconservation building spread over five thousand square meters, and a dormitory building spanning 4,200 square meters, Radjasa said.

In addition, it will have a mini botanical garden for earth education spanning 22,126 square meters, he added.

The geodiversity building will serve as a geotechnology laboratory and a rock repository, he said.

Meanwhile, the geoconservation building will function as a showroom for rock collections and simulations, while the dormitory building will serve as a lodging as well as learning room, he informed.

The Karangsambung site sits on an ancient ocean floor that is rich in fossils and natural rocks, he pointed out.

Every year thousands of students come to Karangsambung to learn about geology, he said.

The Karangsambung geodiversity zone is expected to become a center for learning related to geological diversity or geodiversity.

It is expected to serve as a national center for geodiversity that would facilitate technology development activities related to earth sciences and provide integrated laboratory facilities for earth science education activities.

Bappenas (National Development Planning Agency) is supporting the development of the geodiversity zone, Radjasa said. (INE)
