Manado, N Sulawesi (ANTARA) - The Navy's Main Naval Base (Lantamal) VIII administered 600 doses of Biofarma and AstraZeneca vaccines to Talise islanders in Likupang Barat Sub-district, Minahasa Utara District, North Sulawesi Province.

The vaccination drive was held in Talise Island and at the deck of navy ship KRI Tedong Selar II-VIII-28 on June 28-30, the naval base commander, Brig. Gen. I Wayah Ariwijaya, stated.

On June 28, Lantamal VIII's health workers vaccinated 120 residents of the coastal village of Gangga Dua, while on Day 2, they inoculated 350 residents of Kinabuhutan Village, he remarked.

On June 30, a total of 130 Talise islanders from the villages of Airbanua and Wawunian also received their first shots, Ariwijaya noted in a press statement that ANTARA quoted here, Thursday.

According to Ariwijaya, during the three-day vaccination event, the naval base's vaccinators and health workers did not find "follow-up events after immunization (KIPI)".

In a bid to increase the number of vaccine recipients during the vaccination event, organized by the naval base along with the Minahasa Utara health office, the navy also served fishermen at sea.

To this end, the Lantamal VIII deployed Indonesian navy ship KRI Tedong Selar II-VIII-28 to serve fishermen going fishing by requesting them to head to the vessel's deck for inoculation, he remarked.

In assisting the government's endeavors to achieve one million COVID-19 vaccine jabs per day, the Lantamal VIII also held a two-day mass vaccination drive at Bitung Port to vaccinate two thousand people.

The COVID-19 pandemic initially hit the Chinese city of Wuhan in 2019 and subsequently spread globally, including to nations in the Asia-Pacific region.

The Indonesian government announced the nation's first confirmed cases on March 2, 2020.

Since then, the central and regional governments have striven incessantly to flatten the nation's coronavirus curve by applying healthcare protocols and social restrictions.

As part of the efforts to win the fight against COVID-19, the Indonesian government has also been conducting a nationwide vaccination program to contain infections since January 13, 2021.

Indonesia recently received 10 million doses of bulk vaccines from China's Sinovac.

As of June 20, 2021, the nation had received 104,728,400 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine, comprising 94.5 million Sinovac vaccines, 8.228 million AstraZeneca vaccines, and two million Sinopharm vaccines.
