Jakarta (ANTARA) - Gerindra Party's politician, Rachmawati Soekarnoputri, 70, breathed her last on Saturday following treatment for COVID-19 infection at a hospital.

"Rachmawati Soekarnoputri, the deputy chairman of Gerindra Party's Board of Trustees, passed away this morning at around 6:15 a.m. WIB at the Gatot Subroto Army Hospital Jakarta," the party's chairman, Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, stated here.

Ahmad believes that Rachmawati’s demise was a huge loss for the party. "We called on all Indonesians to pray and forgive her for all her mistakes," he remarked.

Rachmawati, the daughter of first Indonesian president Soekarno, was a mother, sister, and role model in Gerindra Party, according to Ahmad.

A Gerindra politician Andre Rosiade confirmed the news saying that Rachmawati had contracted the coronavirus before her demise.

"That was the information I received. Rachmawati was a patriot, who stood firm in her beliefs that Indonesia would become a sovereign and self-reliant country," he remarked.
