The epicenter of the quake, which struck at 9:41 a.m. local time on Saturday, was located at 1.94 degrees northern latitude and 96.91 degrees eastern longitude, or 75 kilometers northwest of Nias Uatara, at a depth of 10 kilometers, the agency stated.
No tsunami warning was issued following the quake.
The 5.8-magnitude was also felt in Gunung Sitoli and Kabanjahe at Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI II) indicating that the earthquake was felt by some people and led to the hung light articles shaking.
No immediate report was received of any casualty or material damage.
