Surabaya (ANTARA) - East Java's Regional Leadership Communication Forum (Forkopimda) dispatched dozens of ambulances for carrying out door-to-door vaccinations in Surabaya on Wednesday to help accelerate the government's vaccination program.

"The program results from a collaboration between the East Java Provincial Government, TNI, and Polri. There are 29 ambulance vehicles, each of them is manned by four health personnel," East Java regional police chief, Inspector General Nico Afinta, informed.

The ambulances will target people who have so far not been reached by vaccination programs, especially those living in rural areas, he said.

"The mechanism is that the team will come to look for people and families who have not been vaccinated. People only need to show their family cards (KK) and ID cards for data collection, then they will be vaccinated immediately," Afinta informed.

He said that each ambulance is targeting to administer 50 to 100 vaccines and will keep going until its vaccine stock runs out.

The 29 ambulances rolled out under the program comprise 10 vehicles provided by the police, 4 by the TNI, 5 by the East Java Health Agency, and 10 by the Surabaya Health Agency, he added.

Each ambulance, he said, will be manned by four health personnel -- a vaccinator, a screening officer, a p-care admin officer, and a driver. The ambulances will be equipped with a vaccine cool box and emergency kits for adverse events following immunization (AEFI), he added.

"Residents are encouraged to register immediately and get vaccinated. This is part of a large vaccination program. There are already vaccinators in all regions, namely in villages, health centers, and vaccine outlets owned by the provincial government, TNI, and Polri," he said.

The vaccinations are meant to supplement the government's efforts towards handling COVID-19, which is infecting people regardless of place, background, and age, Afinta said.

"Anyone can be 'shot' (contract COVID-19) if they do not protect themselves with a shield which is following the '5M' health protocol and vaccination. Of course, if we are not disciplined, we will be infected. Let's get vaccinated to keep our body strong and healthy," the former South Kalimantan police chief urged.
