Pontianak, West Kalimantan (ANTARA) - Tanjungpura Regional Military Commander Major General Muhammad Nur Rahmad has asked university students to help fight the COVID-19 pandemic that has currently pummeled Indonesia, including West Kalimantan.

"Vaccination is one form of contribution from the youth in COVID-19 handling. While in the momentum of August 17 (Independence Day), with their spirit of youth, university students included in an organization, particularly student's executive bodies, can pioneer simultaneous mass vaccinations programs," Rahmad said here on Thursday.

He said that mass vaccination is a collective effort to boost immunity against the coronavirus, adding that he expected university students to raise awareness and convince the public to take part in vaccination programs.

Rahmad, West Kalimantan Governor Sutarmidji, West Kalimantan regional police chief Inspector General Remigius Sigid Tri Harjanto, and several university rectors from Pontianak and Kubu Raya attended an event held to call for university students' vaccinations on Thursday.

A mass vaccination program was initiated by 12 executive student bodies in West Kalimantan in view of the current surge in COVID-19 cases. The vaccination program targeted 400 university students. A second vaccination program has been planned for August 14, 2021.

Sutarmidji lauded the university students for initiating the mass vaccination program.

"Vaccination is one of our efforts to prevent fatality from COVID-19. Don't be swayed by information that isn't right, because those who are vaccinated can recover quicker should they contract (the virus)," he said.
