Jakarta (ANTARA) - The number of cellphone connections in Indonesia has reached 345.3 million, higher than the nation's total population, Minister of Communication and Informatics Johnny G. Plate, has said.

"The pandemic has brought a massive change across every sector, as well as pushed activity and interaction to the digital realm," Plate said at an online discussion here on Thursday.

In addition, the active Internet network in Indonesia is being utilized by 200 million users, or equivalent to 73.3 percent of Indonesia's population, he informed.

According to Plate, this situation has made Indonesia the country with the fifth highest number of Internet users in the world.

"Not just the pandemic, digital disruption has also pushed greater utilization of the Internet to the point where it has become the basis and the foundation of new policies in the digital sector," he elaborated.

He then outlined Indonesia's six strategic directions to expedite digital transformation.

The first is building digital infrastructure and connectivity that is inclusive, safe, and reliable with high quality of services, he said.

The second is to boost the capability in priority sectors to strengthen geostrategic competitiveness and incentivize quality growth, he added.

The third is to develop digital culture, utilize the demographic bonus, and empower Indonesian citizens in developing the digital world, he informed.

The fourth is to transform Indonesia from a technology consumer to a technology producer through investment in various platforms of national strategic value, he said.

The fifth is to establish open integrated digital government institutions to boost public services, he added.

The sixth is to harmonize regulations and raise funding to support innovation, he continued.

In addition to these directions, Minister Plate said he had also laid out Indonesia's Digital Roadmap 2021-2024, which will guide the country’s digital transformation.

Indonesia's Digital Roadmap 2021-2024 comprises four elements: digital infrastructure, digital management, digital citizens, and digital economy.
