Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Central Jakarta government has kept city parks and other urban green spaces shut during the extension of Level 4 public activity restrictions (PPKM) in Jakarta.

Head of Central Jakarta's City Parks and Forests Office Mila Ananda stated here on Friday that based on a statement letter of the capital city's head of the Parks and Forests Office, all parks, urban forests, public cemeteries, and urban green spaces are closed until August 16, 2021, and this can be extended based on evaluation by the COVID-19 Task Force.

Ananda clarified that public cemeteries will continue to serve funeral processions for the public.

"Malls have opened, but the Jakarta provincial government still monitors the situation, so that the opening (of public spaces) is conducted gradually to prevent parks and urban green spaces from becoming another COVID-19 cluster," Ananda explained.

Over and above these considerations, the office head had observed that not all city parks, including the child-friendly integrated public spaces (RPTRA) in Central Jakarta, had security officers stationed to check the vaccine certificates of residents keen on gaining entry.

Hence, Ananda emphasized that if the government were to ease PPKM rules, then the city parks should have the required number of security officers coupled with limitations in place on the operating hours and visitor capacity.

"Not all parks in Central Jakarta have security officers for strictly monitoring the proof of vaccine certificates. What we are concerned about is parks in densely populated areas since it (the crowding) is difficult to control," she pointed out.

Since PPKM was implemented in early July, parks, urban forests, public cemeteries, and child-friendly integrated public spaces remain shut until now, Ananda noted.

Ananda is optimistic that the daily case count of COVID-19 cases would continue to decline along with more people getting vaccinated. Thus, the transmission rate can be suppressed and public spaces can reopen for social interaction.
