These three approaches are required based on how important cybersecurity is in the digital era and to create a safe digital environment for citizens.
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Communication and Informatics (Kominfo) is taking steps from upstream to downstream in a bid to handle cyber threats and counter negative content in Indonesia.

"These three approaches are required based on how important cybersecurity is in the digital era and to create a safe digital environment for citizens," Director General of Informatics Application Semuel Abrijani Pangerapan noted in a press statement here on Friday.

Pangerapan highlighted the importance of a comprehensive strategy to nurture citizens' awareness of the importance of cybersecurity literacy.

At the upstream level, Kominfo focuses on digital literacy of citizens through the Cyber-creation Digital Literacy National Movement in collaboration with over 110 institutions comprising community, academician, government, and private institutions.

At the mid-level, Kominfo accentuates preventive movements, such as blocking access and reducing source of negative content.

For this level, Kominfo has collaborated with more than 16 related ministries and institutions. For blocking and curbing negative content, the government also cooperates with the electronic system or platform owners.

At the downstream level, Kominfo supports law enforcement to prevent the spread of negative content that would distress citizens and disturb public order.

"In fulfilling this duty, we are partnering with the police and the attorney," Pangerapan explained.

Personal data protection has been Kominfo's priority regarding cybersecurity.

According to Pangerapan, Indonesia currently has over 30 regulations pertaining to personal data protection.

The government is currently working towards putting into place the Personal Data Protection primary law, which is currently unratified.

Pangerapan remarked that discussions with the House of Representatives (DPR) on the Personal Data Protection Bill are still ongoing.

Whilst awaiting the conclusion of discussions, Kominfo has also made preparations over the implementation and management of the Personal Data Protection Bill and public education to protect citizens' data.
