Jakarta (ANTARA) - Directorate General of Sea Transportation of the Transportation Ministry issued a Shipping Notice Number 81/Phbl/2021, dated August 12, 2021, after forecast of extreme weather with high waves in several areas in the next week.

Director of the ministry's Marine and Coastal Guard Unit, Ahmad, stated that the Shipping Notice was issued with the objective of averting ship accidents owing to bad weather and high waves.

"Based on the monitoring of the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) on August 11, 2021, extreme weather with high waves is forecast in several areas on August 11-18, 2021," Ahmad noted in a statement here on Friday.

Meanwhile, the Shipping Notice instructed heads of the Main Harbormaster Office, Harbormaster and Port Authority Offices (KSOP), Port Management Unit (UPP), Batam Special KSOP Office, Sea and Coast Guard Base (PLP), and Navigation Districts across Indonesia to stay alert to the dangers of extreme weather over the next week and forecasts extreme waves above six meters to occur in the East Enggano waters, Banten South waters, Bengkulu West Indian Ocean to the South, and East Java.

Extreme to low waves are forecast in Indonesian waters on August 11-18, 2021.

Extreme waves above six meters in height are forecast in the east waters of Enggano, south waters of Banten, and the West Indian Ocean of Bengkulu to the south, and East Java.

Waves reaching heights of between four to six meters are forecast in the northern waters of Sabang, western waters of Aceh to Mentawai Islands, Bengkulu waters, western waters of Lampung, West Indian Ocean from Aceh to the Mentawai, western and southern Sunda Strait, southern waters of West Java to Sumba Island, Bali Strait - Lombok - Southern Alas, West Sumba Strait, and South Indian Ocean Bali to East Nusa Tenggara.

Waves of 2.5 to four meters in height are forecast to occur in the waters of northern Malacca Strait, eastern waters of Simeulue, southern part of Lampung Bay, southern part of Sape Strait, waters of Sawu Island - Rotte Island - Kupang, Sawu Sea, Java Sea, Southern Karimata Strait, and Arafu Sea.

Meanwhile, moderate waves of 1.25 to 2.50 meters in height are also forecast in the eastern waters of Nias Islands to Mentawai, eastern part of Sumba Strait, the Ombai Strait, southern waters of Anambas Islands, eastern waters of Bintan - Lingga, Natuna Sea, northern waters of Bangka, Belitung waters - Gelasa Strait, Northern Karimata Strait, northern waters of Java Island to Kangean Islands, Southern Kalimantan waters, Kotabaru waters, Southern and Central Makassar Straits, Bali Sea - Sumbawa Sea, Northern Lombok Strait, Sabalana waters - Selayar, Southern Bone Bay, Flores Sea, Baubau waters - Wakatobi, Eastern Sulawesi Sea, Southern waters of Buru Island - Seram Island, Banda Sea, Kepuauan Sermata waters - Tanimbar Islands, Kei Archipelago waters - Aru Islands, Jayapura waters - Sarmi, and Pacific Ocean north of Jayapura.

Ahmad stated that all harbormasters have been instructed to re-monitor weather conditions daily through bmkg.go.id and disseminate information to service users, including publications at terminals or passenger embarkation/debarkation points.

Harbormasters are also urged to postpone giving the Sailing Approval Letter (SPB) until weather conditions were completely safe for sailing.
