Pekanbaru, Riau (ANTARA) - The Pekanbaru Class I prison on Wednesday arranged the second dose of COVID-19 vaccination for one thousand inmates to accelerate the achievement of community immunity in the province, an official said.

The inmates participated enthusiastically in the vaccination program, which was held by Pekanbaru detention house in collaboration with the Riau Provincial Health Office and Pekanbaru City Health Office, as well as the Madani Hospital as the vaccination operator, head of Pekanbaru Prison, Lukman, said here on Wednesday.

"Thank you for the support from the Riau Provincial Health Office and Pekanbaru City Health Office, as well as the Madani Hospital for carrying out this phase II vaccination for the Pekanbaru Detention Center inmates," he added.

The implementation of the second dose of COVID-19 vaccination went smoothly, with the inmates following the health protocols, he informed.

"Once again to all relevant parties, we thank all levels, especially health workers. This is a form of our support to succeeding the nation's vaccination program and efforts to overcome COVID-19," Lukman said.

Meanwhile, head of disease prevention and control at the Pekanbaru City Health Office, Hamdan, said that the vaccination at the Pekanbaru Class I prison would help accelerate the achievement of the national vaccination target.

"Hopefully, by vaccinating all officers and inmates at the Pekanbaru prison, we can prevent the emergence of new COVID-19 clusters inside the prison and in the environment around the prison," he remarked.

The Indonesian government launched nationwide vaccinations on January 13, 2021 in a bid to stem the spread of COVID-19. President Widodo was the first to receive a COVID-19 vaccine in the country.
